A sympathetically restored house and an idyllic location provide the perfect setting for a Provencal retreat.
Nestling in the hills above Aix-en-Provence, St Jerome offers gracious living and a host of activities for a perfect holiday - whether you like swimming, tennis, cycling, walking or just enjoying the sunshine, markets and local food and wine. Set within extensive grounds with mature gardens and elegant trees, this historic house was once a centre of silk production. Nowadays, from the top of the old windmill, you can enjoy uninterrupted views to the Alps in the east, historic Aix (38k) and Mont St Victoria to the south. Less then one hour from Marseille airport (67K).
Meticulous attention to detail - from the pillows and mattresses, through to the stone floors and stunning Salle des Jeux (where signs of silk production is still evident in the walls) ensure easy living. The house even boasts a Steinway grand piano for the musically minded. The grand terrace overlooks the gardens and hills beyond, whilst throughout the property are quiet spaces to relax and eat. Three small water features, through which runs the water from the source (which also provides the water for the swimming pool), create a sense of peace and tranquility. In the summer there is copious lavender and fruit which guests are encouraged to pick, as well as fresh eggs.
There are four generously proportioned double bedrooms, all ensuite, in addition to the grand master bedroom/bathroom, off which runs a charming single bedroom. The 25m heated swimming pool is sufficiently large to keep serious swimmers happy and equipped with a shallow “beach” for younger guests. The tennis court is equipped with a ball machine for those keen to work on their game!
To give you some feedback on the property, I would say that it exceeded our expectations based on the photographs. The standard of decor throughout was to the highest standard. The plentiful supply of towels was much appreciated. Cathy, who is the main contact, was not only great fun but extremely conscientious in making sure we had all we needed. We would certainly look to rent this property again (if we can’t buy it!)
